Look Inside

The Carnivorous Plants ebook is an 83 page guide to the fascinating plants that get their nutrition from animals.

Carnivorous plants are plants that have unique adaptations that enable them to catch and feed off animals such as insects and other small invertebrates. In some instances, they may even catch and feed off small vertebrates such as mice.

Traps are the parts of a carnivorous plant that catch and digest animals. Traps are vegetative parts of these plants, usually formed as modified leaf structures. There are a range of different types of traps to be found:
- Some traps are “active”, involving a degree of movement by the plant to trap the animal. For example, a Venus Fly Trap will rapidly spring closed like two hinged doors, trapping the animal in the middle.
- Other traps are “passive”, with modifications such as sticky secretions that cause the animal to become stuck on the plant (e.g.Drosera), or encased within a chamber that is difficult to escape (e.g. a pitfall trap).
